ASM’s Summer Camp for ages 6-7, offers a fun, creative, and hands-on introduction to coding and robotics through Scratch programming and LEGO Spike Essentials. Running daily from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM, this engaging camp helps young learners understand the basics of animation, game design, and storytelling with Scratch, while also building and programming LEGO robots using motors, sensors, and loops. Each day features exciting projects, interactive lessons, and a blend of creativity and logic. Campers will finish the week by showcasing their final projects and receiving a certificate of participation.
This summer camp is designed for children ages 6–7. The program is beginner-friendly and created to help young students explore coding, robotics, creativity, and problem-solving in a fun, hands-on environment.
Students will be introduced to Scratch programming and LEGO Spike Essentials robotics. They will learn basic coding concepts through animations, storytelling, mini-games, interactive projects, and LEGO robot builds. Students will also explore motors, sensors, loops, conditions, and simple programming logic.
No previous experience is required. This camp is designed for beginners. Students will be guided step by step as they learn how to use Scratch and LEGO Spike Essentials.
Scratch is a beginner-friendly visual coding platform that allows students to create animations, stories, games, and interactive projects. In this camp, students will use Scratch to make simple animations, create short animated stories, design mini-games, and build a final project.
LEGO Spike Essentials is a hands-on robotics and building system designed for young learners. Students will use LEGO pieces, motors, sensors, and basic coding to build and program simple machines and robots.
The camp runs from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM. Parent drop-off begins at 8:00 AM, and pick-up is at 12:00 PM.
Yes. Snacks will be provided during the camp. There is also a deli downstairs in the lobby for families who would like to purchase additional food or drinks.
Yes. This is an in-person summer camp held at ASM Educational Center in Rockville, Maryland.
The camp runs for 5 days, Monday through Friday.
On Day 1, students will be introduced to Scratch and LEGO Spike Essentials. They will learn what coding is, explore the Scratch interface, work with sprites, stages, and blocks, and create a simple animation such as making a cat dance. Students will also be introduced to the LEGO Spike Essentials kit and build a simple LEGO robot.
On Day 2, students will focus on Scratch storytelling and basic robotics. They will create a short animated story using backgrounds, sounds, and simple sequences. They will also build a simple LEGO machine, such as a spinning fan or merry-go-round, and program basic start and stop motion.
On Day 3, students will create a beginner-friendly Scratch mini-game, such as Catch the Apple or a maze game. They will learn about if-then logic and scorekeeping. During the LEGO robotics portion, students will build a simple robot car and use sensors to make it move, stop, and turn based on input.
On Day 4, students will create interactive Scratch projects using buttons, keyboard controls, sounds, and effects. They will also work on a LEGO Bowling Fun project, where they program with loops and conditions so their build can repeat actions and respond to a touch sensor.
On Day 5, students will complete their final Scratch project, which may be a game, animation, or interactive story. They will also build their own LEGO robot invention, program it, demonstrate what it can do, and participate in group presentations. Students will receive a participation certificate.
Students will complete Scratch animations, animated stories, mini-games, interactive projects, LEGO robot builds, simple machines, sensor-based robots, and a final project showcase.
Yes. Students will participate in a final showcase and receive a certificate of participation.
No. This camp combines coding, robotics, creativity, problem-solving, teamwork, and presentation skills. Students will learn basic programming through Scratch and hands-on robotics through LEGO Spike Essentials.
Students may bring a water bottle and any personal items they may need for the morning. All required classroom materials and hands-on learning activities will be provided during the camp.
This camp helps young students build early confidence with technology. Through Scratch and LEGO robotics, students practice creativity, logical thinking, problem-solving, teamwork, and communication in a fun and supportive learning environment.
